Respiratory medicine continues to face dynamic and increasingly complex challenges. Respiratory diseases ranging from infectious conditions such as tuberculosis and pneumonia, to chronic disorders including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma, as well as malignancies such as lung cancer, also lung fibrotic disease (ILD and occupational fibrotic diseases) consistently represent major contributors to the global and national health burden, with substantial morbidity and mortality.
Amid these challenges, the diagnostic and therapeutic landscape of pulmonology has undergone remarkably rapid advancement. Innovations in imaging techniques, biological markers (biomarkers), targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and precision medicine have ushered in a new era of patient care. These developments demand that healthcare professionals continuously update their knowledge and skills to deliver optimal, evidence-based treatment.
Within this evolving context, the concept of resilience in respiratory health has gained increasing importance. Resilience encompasses not only the capacity of patients to withstand and recover from illness, but also the adaptability of healthcare systems and clinicians in confronting, adjusting to, and effectively managing diverse respiratory challenges. Building such resilience requires a holistic approach — spanning prevention, early detection, appropriate management, and rehabilitation.
Recognizing this urgency, the Department of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga – Dr. Soetomo General Academic Hospital, Surabaya is committed to actively promoting the dissemination of up-to-date scientific knowledge. Through the 2026 Continuing Medical Education (CME) program themed “Building Resilience in Respiratory Health for a Better Life,” we aim to provide a scientific forum to enhance professional competence and strengthen respiratory health resilience — ultimately improving patients’ quality of life.
